Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company has been recognised for its work supporting local communities and its commitment to corporate responsibility by achieving Gold status in the Business in the Community's (BiTC) 2012 Corporate Responsibility Index. This is the seventh year running that Serco have achieved the Gold award reflecting the commitment of our people to supporting and contributing to the communities in which they work and to making a positive impact on society.
In the awards each company is rated on a number of criteria including their corporate responsibility strategy and performance, the extent to which responsible business practice is integrated within an organisation and how well a company is improving its impact on society and the environment. Companies are invited to participate in the Index if they have revenues of over £250 million and are FTSE 100 or FTSE 250 listed companies.

The CR Index has helped to highlight clearly those best practice examples that bring to life in a powerful way what integrated responsible practice really looks like. Serco encourages employees to engage with the communities in which they work through schemes such as a partnership with public and private sector stakeholders to raise health and safety standards among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the South East of England. As part of this scheme, Serco sponsored over 400 free occupational health checks.
Other schemes include The National Physical Laboratory's (NPL) Academy, which allows around 30 GCSE to A Level students to spend a week finding out what a career in Science is really like. Serco's local government business runs a programme to challenge young people to find solutions to real business problems, giving them the opportunity to experience the world of work and raise their aspirations. And finally, Serco's Merseyrail contract has also set up a partnership with a local college as part of the 'Business Class' programme, which offers hands on assignments along with weekly sessions to challenging students to help to raise their aspirations and improve academic performance.
