Located in what was East Germany the State has battled rigorously to replace state-owned enterprises with modern and competitive businesses. The Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Magdeburg and Halle-Dessau alone had 107,443 member companies in 2013.

Over 99 percent of companies are small or medium-sized enterprises and they represent the largest employment Group in the region. On the back of this the Ministry of Science and Economic Affairs started their SME offensive “I³”: looking for growth through innovation, investment and internationalisation.

The university landscape is developing into an incubator for clever specialists and strong innovation; research and development is dynamic and the chances of getting a traineeship are extremely positive.

An efficient transport route network is the equal of other European regions with several thousand kilometres of rails, motorways, federal and state roads that were newly developed after 1990.

And in terms of the development and utilisation of renewable energies, Saxony-Anhalt is amongst the best regions in Germany.
